I wondered this too... I have been following what I read in Charmayne's book. I give my horse half of his dinner a couple hours before my run, along with leaving a hay net and a bucket of water by him the moment we get there.
Then depending on how soon I leave afterwards I'll feed the other half of his dinner plus more hay. Usually I wait and feed when I get back home, but still at least offer water right after a run.

I have been told that it takes 5 hours for a horse to digest there food... or something like that. Some people I know feed their horses 5 hours before they run them. But I'm not sure if this is how it should be done. [Confused]

My races are usually in the morning, so I feed them around 7 and they run around 10-12. I don't ever feed grain before I run. I always feed grain at the end of the night.

I agree. That's how I've always done it. Same times and everything. And then for our evening races we usually run around 8 o'clock so I'll feed them a few hours before we leave-typically between four and five- i know that's kind of early to some, but that way it gives the some time to settle their stomachs before we drive.

Here's what I do,
I usually feed in the morn at 8:00 am
if I run within the next 1 1/2 - 2 hrs I won't give her anything if it's within 4-5 hrs I'll give her 1/2 - 3/4 of her feeding and the rest when we're done.

As far as hay: None 1 1/2 hrs before our run.

Water in front of her at all times.

Same for in the evening. I usually feed around 6:00 [Wink]

I usually feed at 6am 12pm and 6pm Usually this will put me 2-3 hours before I'll run the earliest at anything (enless its one of those odd slack starts at 7am days then I feed at 5am). I feed up to 2 hours before I run, and have hay in front of them till the time I start saddleing them to make my run.
